      <image:title>Pricing - Hourly Rates</image:title>
      <image:caption>I’ve found that a lot of clients are much more comfortable with an hourly billing arrangement, and there are definitely situations where there’s no better option, like when the amount of work depends on factors outside of your and my control (like a third party’s consent, for example). For hourly work, I charge a rate of $300 per hour. I offer new clients a promotional discount of $50 per hour off for the first month or two of working with me; if your business is very early stage, I may offer this discount for longer and/or a steeper discount. I’m also happy to offer better rates if your business or project has a compelling social mission, is led by or serves members of a marginalized community, and so on.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Pricing - Flat Fee</image:title>
      <image:caption>Whenever possible, I like to offer transparent, flat-fee, project-based pricing to give you maximum certainty, in advance, about what you’ll pay. The actual pricing will naturally depend on the kind of project. A trademark application will cost you $1000 (plus the government’s filing fees, which can vary). A greenlight review will cost you $200 for any agreement up to 5 pages unless you need an extremely short turnaround time. If you’re interested in flat fee, project billing for something else, please contact me so we can figure out an arrangement that works for you.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Pricing - Subscription</image:title>
      <image:caption>If you know there’s some particular service you’re likely to need with some regularity, I’m happy to offer subscription pricing with built-in discounting. Please contact me and we’ll work out an arrangement that works for you. I’ll never lock you into a long-term commitment. You can cancel any time, and I’ll be sure to check in regularly to make sure you still feel like you’re getting good value. In my experience, the greenlight review and the legal diagnostic are particularly good fits for the subscription approach.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Pricing - Payment Options</image:title>
      <image:caption>As a general rule, I’ll bill you at the end of each calendar month for any work done in that month (or any subscription period ending then). Except for very large projects, I rarely require any kind of retainer or pre-payment before the work gets done. My basic posture is that, assuming you pay your bill eventually, paying me should never interfere with your business operations. As long as you let me know in advance, I’m usually willing to be flexible on the timing and/or structuring of your payments.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Trademarks - What Do Trademarks Do?</image:title>
      <image:caption>Trademark law offers protection to brand names, logos, and anything else that uniquely distinguishes your project, product, or service. Having your trademark registered with the US Patent and Trademark Office will give you peace of mind, make it less likely that someone else will accidentally start using a confusingly similar mark, and help you fend off anyone intentionally using a similar mark or trying to pass themselves off as you. Registering your trademark is a low-effort, low-cost way to get effective, long-term protection for the projects that matter to you.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Greenlight review - The Problem</image:title>
      <image:caption>Whether you're running a business or just starting out, you have a million contracts to sign. Some of these are mission-critical and you need them to be as perfect as you can get them, but many of them — hiring a photographer for your grand opening, signing that NDA just to open a negotiation with another business, and so on — are ones where good enough is good enough. But lawyers are expensive and it's hard to justify running everything by an attorney who's going to go over it with a fine-toothed comb, hand you back a document with more red ink than black, and charge you an arm and a leg for the trouble of slowing you down. At the same time, you know it's dangerous to sign a legally binding agreement without having it reviewed by an attorney. So what can you do? How do you know if it's good to sign?</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/56be86088a65e2eeeab5f919/f337974c-04af-447d-9674-2a0ebc9f3e1a/15.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Greenlight review - The Solution</image:title>
      <image:caption>Instead of wasting time and money chasing perfection where it's not necessary, have me review it to spot any red flags and answer two simple questions: "Does this agreement do what it's supposed to do?" and "Is it good to sign, as is?" I can do this for you at a flat rate and in most cases get you your answer within 48 hours, so you can get back to building your business — with the confidence that you haven't accidentally signed away the farm, but without having to pump the brakes to renegotiate agreements that are ultimately not mission-critical.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/56be86088a65e2eeeab5f919/8c62bb13-e461-475a-9cbe-b1c789b466b3/16.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Greenlight review - How Does It Work?</image:title>
      <image:caption>Simple! You send me the agreement you'd like reviewed and, usually within 48 hours, I get back to you with one of the following responses: 1. Good to sign as is 2. Good to sign as is, but here are some things to keep an eye on 3. Good to sign, but only with these minor edits 4. Do not sign under any circumstance 5. Salvageable, but will need a deeper review or extensive redrafts If an agreement turns out to need a deeper review or extensive redrafts, I can provide that service at a competitive hourly rate (with whatever you paid for the greenlight review credited towards that), help you find a referral, or work directly with your existing attorney to make sure you're taken care of.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>

      <image:title>Greenlight review - What Does It Cost?</image:title>
      <image:caption>As a baseline, it’ll cost you $200 per agreement up to 5 pages, with a guaranteed turnaround time of 72 hours. The up-sells: 1. $100 more for every 10 pages beyond 5 2. $50 more per 5 pages of agreement for a 36-hour turnaround time If you have a lot of contracts that need to be looked at, I'll also give a $50 discount on every contract reviewed after the fourth in each calendar month. I'm happy to negotiate prices depending on your budget and needs. If you end up regularly needing greenlight review, we can work out a subscription deal with preferential pricing.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Greenlight review - What If I Already Have A Lawyer?</image:title>
      <image:caption>That's great! I'm glad you're being proactive about protecting your business. My aim here isn't to step on anyone's toes or divert work away from your primary attorney — it's to make sure their time (and your money) is being spent on the most important tasks, while also ensuring that the more incidental or ancillary things don't slip through the cracks. I'm happy to work with your lawyer, whether directly or through you, to make sure we're all on the same page and I'm on the lookout for all the things they'd like us to worry about.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Legal diagnostic - Spot The Issues</image:title>
      <image:caption>Sometimes, the hard part isn’t getting answers to your questions — it’s knowing what questions to ask. That’s what this legal diagnostic service is for. Whether you have an official proposal or business plan for me to review, or you’d just like to informally talk through your project with me, I’m here to read, listen, and give you a frank and accessible assessment of what legal issues are likely to come up. By “unbundling” this kind of issue-spotting assessment and offering it as a standalone service, I’m hoping to make it easier (and cheaper) for you to get clarity on what the likely legal issues are without making you commit in advance to the sometimes-involved and often-expensive legal work of actually solving those problems.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Legal diagnostic - Don’t Waste Time</image:title>
      <image:caption>For all those times where “I don’t know what I should be worrying about!” is your biggest worry, this should be your first stop. No question too big, no question too small, and no enormous or unpredictable price-tag. If you’ve got a one-off project you’d like assessed, I offer project-based pricing starting at $200 per diagnostic (though it may need to be higher if the materials you need reviewed are particularly voluminous or complex). If you’d like me to be available for this on an ongoing basis — what I like to think of as the “I know a guy” engagement — I’m happy to discuss a subscription deal. Oh, and don’t worry: anything you pay me for a diagnostic will be credited towards the bill for any actual problem-solving that you engage me to do once we’ve done the assessment.</image:caption>

      <image:title>For attorneys - Education</image:title>
      <image:caption>We've all had clients who need their hand held, who get in your way (and their own) by hounding you with questions or misunderstanding legal fundamentals. While it's understandable that the client wants a complete picture of what's happening with their business and what they're paying you for, this also puts you in a difficult position: your job is to handle their legal needs, and you can't do that if you're stuck handling their legal education. With my wealth of experience communicating complex ideas and concepts simply, I can provide your client with the information they need to feel comfortable and free you up to zealously represent their interests. I can liaise directly with your client or prepare materials for you to share with them, specially tailored to their particular issues and level of sophistication, whether they're a seasoned pro or just starting out.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>If you're developing a game, that game will consist in large part of rules. Those rules have to cohere and avoid contradiction. As an avid gamer, an experienced writer-of-instructions, and a lawyer with a knack for finding gaps and loopholes in rulesets, I can help you thoroughly map rule interactions to fine-tune your design, prevent conflicts, and reduce ambiguity. (Alternately, if part of the point of your game is having the players argue about the rules, I can help you find the most fruitful ambiguities.)</image:caption>

      <image:title>Incentive alignment - More Than “Yes”</image:title>
      <image:caption>Closing a deal isn’t just a matter of getting the best price. When you’re developing an ongoing business relationship, it’s crucial to build in an incentive structure that keeps everyone’s interests aligned in a long-term way. Sometimes, what you need isn’t just a lawyer to draw up the paperwork — it’s someone who understands your business, and the business you’re partnering with, well enough to structure your deal so you both come out ahead. Any good contract will outline the best- and worst-case scenario for your business relationship. But a great contract will be set up to actually make the former more likely and the latter less. That means figuring out how to make sure that you win together and that neither of you wins at the other’s expense. Equal parts legal advice and business coaching, an incentive alignment will help eliminate any perverse incentives and build in virtuous cycles — all specifically tailored to the unique circumstances, goals, and concerns of the businesses involved.</image:caption>
